A Personal Story

I could have become an engineer or a scientist. My interest in natural science and its application originally led me to study engineering physics. Through my studies I soon discovered that what really makes me tick is the thrill of solving complex problems, and that business problems are at least as exciting, and typically have far more impact than the problems in science or engineering.

To me BCG is a unique place to solve challenging problems together with a highly dynamic group of people. The people I work with at BCG are diverse, but regardless of their seniority they all share the same drive to relentlessly push thinking and client solutions to the next level.

What is most rewarding at BCG is when you can see the impact of our work over several years; seeing how the strategy renewals, acquisitions, or organizational and operational improvements that you have been part of are resulting in sustainable change and value creation for our clients.

A Personal Story

I have always been interested in problem solving, so it was natural for me to study engineering. During my studies I developed a solid set of technological skills and learned how they can help individuals, companies, and society develop. However, I also understood that technology can become obsolete in a couple of years in today's fast-paced world, while truly brilliant initiatives have long-term implications.

Toward the end of my studies I realized I wanted to work in a broader setting, not just with technology. During a BCG presentation, I was extremely impressed by the drive of the people, the variety and importance of the work they did, and the impact they had with their clients. What they offered sounded almost too good to be true.

After two years at BCG I can honestly say that it has proven to be much better than I expected. The work is extremely rewarding and the team of great, engaged, and driven people are invaluable. My colleagues always inspire me to go the extra mile and really aim to make a difference for clients. In addition, they make the occasional late night much more fun! Even though I don't use my engineering skills directly every day, I am certain that the experience I have helps me in my work. The logical approach to solving a problem is instrumental to my role, and is something I often use. In addition, I can bring a new perspective to my team compared with people who come from a business background.

So far I have worked with clients from the United States to China, in industries including industrial goods, airlines, pharmaceuticals, and private equity. The most rewarding thing is to see that our teams really do make a difference, which is exactly what I was looking for as an engineering student.

BCG provides me with challenges I would find in no other place.

A Personal Story
Perhaps I have followed a bit of a non-traditional career path for a telecommunications engineer, but I have found it to be the perfect fit for me. After trying life as a management consultant through internships and discussing with friends, I knew that this was what I wanted to do. And I found out that BCG was the place I wanted to be. I thrive when working with different tasks across industries. BCG provides me with unique challenges that I would find in no other place, and an approach to work that really makes me enjoy it. The way we conduct our projects at BCG is a lot about collaboration and bringing ideas to the table, while at the same time leveraging experience from previous projects. The teams are not that big and I find that my input is appreciated even though my track record is among the shorter among us, and to me this is really rewarding. I have learned a lot during my first year, and I know I will continue to learn a lot more in the time to come.
Background
Tormod holds an MS in telecommunications from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). He spent one year as an exchange student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Prior to his university education, Tormod worked in the Norwegian Army.
